Teaching Methodology and Curriculum Development for Technical Education Teachers

Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Technical Education Development (SEAMEO TED) co-organized a workshop on “Teaching Methodology and Curriculum Development” with Kampong Chheuteal Institute of Technology which was participated by 41 teachers from Kampong Chheuteal General and Technical Demonstration High School, Kampong Thom Province, Cambodia. This workshop aimed to enhance teachers ‘capacity with techniques in developing curriculum and textbooks and teaching methodology for technical education.

During the opening ceremony, Dr. Ai highlighted that the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for teachers is very crucial in improving students’ learning outcomes. He also stressed that teachers of technical education need to have knowledge of curriculum development and design since in the field of technical and vocational education and training must updated constantly to stay relevant due to the fast pace of technological development and innovations. Therefore, teachers could adjust existing teaching modules or develop new teaching content based on these changes.

 

Additionally, teaching methodology for technical education is equally important for teachers. Teachers need to update their skills in this regard, adapting to new ways teaching and learning and how they can make their lessons captivating to actively engage the students and maximize the learning outcomes of the students.

This workshop was lectured by three experts: Dr. Songheang Ai, Centre director of SEAMEO TED, and two Chinese experts—Ms. Zhao Peili, professor of Guangxi Polytechnic of Construction and Ms. Cen Hua, Associate professor Guangxi Vocational and Technical Institute of Industry. The three trainers covered five different topics with a balance of theory and practices: (1) process of curriculum development; (2) test development and assessment; (3) instructional system design; and (4) Skills competition for teachers and students in China (5) capstone project in Chinese Technical colleges.

As part of lecturing methods, trainers enabled participants to practice what they have learnt by engaging them in the group work, discussion and hands on activity. The course evaluation was also undertaken to measure the level of their learning and satisfaction with the course.
