Training Course on “Robot Control” for Technical Education Teachers of Electricity, Electronics and Mechanics

Siem Reap Province: The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Center for Technical Education Development (SEAMEO TED) had organized a training course on “robot control” for 55 participants as technical education teachers of Electricity, Electronics and Mechanics from 14 general and technical high schools throughout Cambodia from the 20th to 22nd of September, 2023 at Puok General and Technical High School in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. The objective of the training is to provide Technical Education teachers with skills and knowledge regarding robot control which is an important aspect of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and to strengthen the effective implementation of technical education curricula for Electricity, Electronics and Mechanics at secondary education level.

During an opening ceremony, H.E Dr. Chuon Chivin, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport appreciated the opportunity to welcome all participants who attended the course. He highlighted the priority plans of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, which have played important roles in contributing to the achievement of national strategic development plans of the Royal Government of Cambodia. He also hailed the importance of the course as it would help build the competence of Technical Education teachers who reportedly have limited knowledge and skills in teaching Robot Control subject and strongly believed that the course would achieve its objective.

The trainer Mr. Thlang Sochen is a senior lecturer of National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia (NPIC) and has an extensive experience in leading national robotic teams over ten years. During the three-day course, he covered a number of topics such as Introduction and Types of Robots, Actuator and Sensors (Dc Motor and Driver Motor), Types of Sensors for Robots, Speed and Position Sensors, Mobile Robot and its Motion, MECANUM Wheel Robot and Equation of Motion, Setting up a Mobile Robot Kid, Mobile Robot Programming, Introduction to Wireless Remote Control, Bluetooth Remote Control and Using Smart Phone as Remote Control.

Throughout the training, the participants were offered ample opportunity to enhance their competence and understanding about robotics in general through collaboration work and hands-on activities. For example, trainees were provided with opportunity to work in teams and learn about coding in regards to robot navigation, work on the projects assigned by the trainer to assemble robot cars and make them work and control them using different methods including via Wireless Control, Bluetooth and Smart Phones. During the assigned tasks, teams of participants were so engaged and competitive. As a result, all the teams got their robot cars to work as intended even though some teams took longer than the other.

At the conclusion of the training, Dr. Songheang Ai, Centre Director of SEAMEO TED, expressed his appreciation to the school management of host institution, SEAMEO TED team, trainer and trainees who contributed to this successful course. He also appealed to all the trainees to keep striving to learn more about robot control and robotics and share the knowledge they had learned during the course with students and other technical teachers at their respective schools. At the end, the participants were presented with certificates of completion.
